Managing the Command Hierarchy

Organisation_Administrator permissions are required for some steps.
Building a robust Command Hierarchy is important to ensure that Appraisals you set up have the attention of the right people. This guide will walk you through the steps on how to create, move, and remove Employees.
In this article:
1. Command Hierarchy view
To access the Command Hierarchy:
- Open the Go To... menu.
- Hover over 'Appraisals'.
- Select 'Command Hierarchy' (under 'Organisation').
You will be taken to this overview page:
By default, only the two top levels of the hierarchy can be seen. You can collapse or expand the hierarchical relationship by clicking the icon next to the top-level Employee's name.
To open a view showing only a selected Employee's reporting line:
- Highlight their row.
- Click 'Command Hierarchy▼'.
- Select 'Explore from here'.
Clicking any Employee's hyperlinked name will open their User Notebook.
2. Adding Employees
To add an Employee:
- Open the Command Hierarchy view.
- Highlight the item row for the Employee who needs a subordinate added.
Skip this step if you are adding a top-level Employee. - Click 'Command Hierarchy▼'.
- Select 'Add/Remove subordinate' or 'New top-level Employee'.
- Choose the correct Employee(s) from the list.
You can add multiple Employees as a single action when adding subordinates. - Click 'Save & Close'.
3. Moving Employees
To move an Employee:
- Open the Command Hierarchy view.
- Highlight the item row for the Employee who needs to be moved.
You can Ctrl + Click to select multiple rows. - Click 'Command Hierarchy▼'.
- Select 'Move this Employee'.
- Choose the Employee(s) new manager.
You can also select 'Promote one level' if the Employee is not at top-level.
4. Removing Employees
To remove an Employee:
- Open the Command Hierarchy view.
- Highlight the item row for the Employee who needs to be removed.
You can Ctrl + Click to select multiple rows. - Click 'Command Hierarchy▼'.
- Select 'Remove selected Employee(s)'.
- Confirm your choice by clicking 'Remove'.
Removing a top-level Employee?
Their subordinates will not be assigned to another manager and will automatically be moved one level up.
